Last month was the first time I'd taken part in this monthly blog story telling & sharing created by Sian. Not only did I enjoy writing my own, which was a total surprise to me, I also loved reading the stories of others & over a couple of days I read over 35 stories, all so different but all so precious.
This month I want to share with you these little guys.
After many years wrapped in kitchen roll & stored in an old margarine tub these little critters now have a permanent home out on display for all to see.
They remind me immediately of the hours and hours spent as a child kneeling up staring through the glass at a huge collection of these glass animals my Gran had in a cabinet at her home. I particularly remember an octopus with it's fine tentacles curling & a seal balancing a beach ball on his nose.
I have no idea why she collected them or where they came from but these 3 were given to me after she died and are a precious reminder of her & the happy times spent at her house during my childhood, as she sadly passed away when I was 17.
If you look carefully you can see some of them on the top shelf in this cabinet beside my cousin (I'm the middle one !)in this photo taken in January 1970.

I have always loved glass animals and remember my great nan having a few. I loved them so much that I went to a glass blowing shop and had one made when I was little, sadly it got broken. Great story and such a cute picture of you when you were younger x
ReplyDeleteOh, as soon as I saw these they brought back memories of my Nana! She had a collection in her glass cabinet too! Thank you for sharing them - and I love the photo of the three of you! x

ReplyDeleteWhat lovely treasures to have. I can remember my mum and gran having glass animals and I vaguely remember going to some seaside place and watching them being made through a shop window. I remember having some of those too and I also remember seeing them being made. Lovely to have such a reminder of a special Gran
ReplyDeleteWhat great knick knacks to remind you of your beloved Gran! They look so fragile. I'm sure she's very happy knowing that you are still enjoying things that were precious to her!
ReplyDeleteI remember being at the beach and standing in front of the glassblower as he made little animals much like the ones your grandmother left you. I am amazed at how delicate but strong these little glass animals are.
ReplyDeleteDelighted that you chose those little glass animals - my Grandma Carolyn collected animals too - different to yours but the experience of kneeling up in the kitchen to stare at them is just the same. The extra photo is a great pairing to give background.
ReplyDeleteI remember these... amazing how the world has changed since 1970 isn't it..x
ReplyDeletehe he! I have never seen these before. They are sweet and so colourful.
ReplyDeleteThese are lovely and I think one of my grandparents might have had something similar.
ReplyDeleteHow fabulous are they and love the photo too. I remember alot of my Aunties having these and I am sure they are Murano or something like that. A lovely keepsake and memory. Hugs, Claire x
ReplyDeleteOh I used to have lots of these! I remember the octopus! What ever happened to them I wonder? You have taken me back to my early childhood, right into my bedroom... Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteThey are very cute little glass animals. I remember watching a glass blower make this sort of thing every second weekend when I was about 13. It was so fascinating to watch animals come to like right before your eyes.
